New innovative forum launched in Puntland, Somalia

At Puntland Library and Resource Center on October 11, 2010, Somali Family Services assembled Puntland’s stakeholders to strength the communication bridge between Government, Civil Society, and the community as whole toachieve a successful peace and State building. The forum is first of many three-day training workshops under the project DEMOS (Democratic Engagement and Management for Somalia) funded by United Nation Development Program.

Executive branch, legislative, judiciary, councils, youth, women organizations, business people, elders, religious leaders, Neighborhood committee’s chairs and Media attended the forum, Special civil society women delegation from Southern Somalia has made visit to the forum

and gave few minutes of inspirational talk. The delegation who led by Asha Omar Geesdiir, a well-known women activist in south central Somalia, briefed the forum the current situation in Mogdishu and emphasized the necessity of civil societies and appealed a close coordination between civil societies. Afterwards the delegation toured Puntland Library and Resource Center.

Discussions were further enriched by speeches by the speaker of the house, Abdirashid Hirsi, and the Mayer of Garowe, Abdiasis Nur Ilmi. Numerous salient points were raised at this forum and other pertinent issue was discussed and dissected into details. Overall, two

major issues were pinpointed; instable security/peace and plastic waste threat. The issue regarding instable security and the absent for lasting peace were said to be due to lack of police capacity, weak law reinforcement, and usage of traditional ruling to penalize criminals of the law. Antidotes that could treat the symptoms were discovered and will be allocated strategies to administer it
