Educate A Child
Educate a Child (EAC) project aims at reducing out-of-school children (OOSC) in poverty- and conflict-stricken areas through provision of quality basic education through Formal and Alternative Basic Education. The goal of the project, over a three-year period, is to support 64,000 OOSC (of whom 45% girls), in the 6-13 age group to access quality formal education, through school construction and rehabilitation; provision of education materials; capacity development of teachers; key school management bodies and regional education authorities; and advocacy and social mobilisation. Out of the 64,000 OOSC targeted in Somalia, 12,000 are living in the hard-to-reach regions of Puntland.
In partnership with UNICEF, Somali Family Service (SFS) will be implementing selected project activities in support of the overall project goal in Garacad and Jarriban Districts in Mudug Region. SFS have been selected based on their previous and current work with UNICEF through Save the Children International (SCI) Basic Education for pastoralists’ programme,mplementationof multi-sectoral disciplines and familiarity with the community.
The main components of this intervention will be as follows:
- Identification, training and engagement of 4 community mobilisers;
- Mobilisation and enrolment of 2000 (900 girls) out-of-school children into school;
- On-the-job training of 15 Community Education Committees (CECs) leading to formulation of school development plans and innovative proposals for attracting OOSC;
- Award and support to implement two mini grants to schools with best innovative projects;
- Establishment of 15 Child-to-Child (CtC) clubs in 15 target schools;
- Training of 30 CtC facilitators teachers (1 male, 1 female per target school)
- Establishment and capacity building of 2 DEBs In Jarriban and Garacad districts
