SFS in partnership with UNICEF and Jubbaland Ministry of Social Affairs conducted a massive 12 days back to school door-to-door campaigns in IDP settlements and host community in Kismayo, Jubbaland from the 4th -15th March. The door-to-door back to school campaign advocacy campaign aimed to sensitize parents on the importance of education and convince the community particularly the IDP population to enrol their children to school.

This campaign targeted parents and children directly as the social mobilizers interacted with parents at their own homes to advocate for them to enrol their children in school.  SFS recruited 30 social mobilizers using a set criteria to conduct the campaign. An induction for recruited social mobilizers was held on how to effectively conduct the back to school door-to-door campaign, how to convince parents to enrol their children to school and how to respond to questions raised by parents. SFS developed a campaign form which guided the social mobilizers in the advocacy process.

The mobilizers were able to knock on people’s door, introduce themselves, find out the number of children in the household, how many school going children are out of school and the reason why. The mobilizers were able to convince the parents to enrol their children in the nearest schools. SFS had already discussed with school principals about this campaign and advocated for the schools to accept and admit the out of school children to be enrolled in their schools.

SFS then further held a review meeting after the campaign for the social mobilizers. The purpose of the meeting was to get feedback from the social mobilizers on their key achievements, challenges, lessons learnt and recommended actions.

The mobilizers noted that there was a huge number of school age children at home, as parents do not see the importance of education because of  their low awareness about the value of education.

The campaign was able to reach 3600 households as 30 mobilizers each covered 10 households per day for 12 days.

This campaign is a component of rapid response project (CERF) which aims to ensure 2000 out of school children get free access to education in the following schools; Gananep Primary School, Rugta primary School, Salihudin Primary School, Fanole Primary School, Mohamed Jama Primary School, Khalid Bin Walid. SFS had advocated for the schools to enrol the out of school children in their schools.
