Media for Peace-building

Harnessing Media to Promote Peace and Stability in Somalia

In Somalia, where historical conflicts, political instability, and misinformation have contributed to divisions, media plays a crucial role in fostering peace, social cohesion, and good governance.

Somali Family Services (SFS) is committed to using media as a tool to promote dialogue, amplify marginalized voices, and educate communities on critical social issues.
Through independent journalism, civic engagement programs, and digital outreach, SFS leverages media platforms—including its flagship initiative, Radio Sahan—to strengthen community resilience and support Somalia’s journey toward sustainable peace.

Key Areas of Focus

Radio Sahan: A Platform for Civic Engagement

Established in 2013, Radio Sahan is a public affairs community radio station that serves as a trusted source of information for Somali citizens. It provides a platform for open discussions on governance, human rights, and development while ensuring that the voices of youth, women, and marginalized groups are heard.

Reaches over 21,875 listeners across Puntland and neighboring regions, with expanded coverage up to 150 km beyond Garowe.

Broadcasts interactive programs featuring discussions between community members, civil society leaders, and government officials.

Promotes transparency by providing a platform for citizens to question policymakers and hold them accountable.

Countering Hate Speech and Misinformation

Misinformation and divisive narratives have fueled conflicts in Somalia. SFS works to combat these issues by:

Training journalists on ethical reporting and conflict-sensitive journalism.

Running awareness campaigns that educate communities on media literacy and critical thinking.

Promoting fact-based reporting to reduce misinformation and enhance public trust in media.

Peace Dialogues and Community Engagement

SFS facilitates media-driven peace dialogues to encourage conflict resolution and reconciliation at the grassroots level. These initiatives:

Provide safe spaces for discussions between conflicting groups, helping to foster mutual understanding.

Feature testimonies from peacebuilders, religious leaders, and civil society representatives to inspire collective action.

Promote inter-clan and inter-regional cooperation by highlighting shared values and common challenges.

Strengthening Independent Media Institutions

A free and independent media sector is essential for a democratic and peaceful society. SFS supports local media institutions by:

Training journalists and media professionals in responsible and accurate reporting.

Providing technical assistance for radio stations and digital media platforms.

Advocating for press freedom and the protection of journalists in Somalia.

Youth Engagement in Media

Young people are powerful agents of change, and SFS believes in equipping them with media skills to promote positive narratives. Our youth-focused media initiatives:

Provide training in radio production, social media advocacy, and storytelling.

Engage youth in peace campaigns to counter violent extremism and political disinformation.
Support youth-led content creation that highlights social issues, governance, and community solutions.
