Strategic Pillar

Livelihoods & Household Resilience

SFS strengthens livelihoods and economic resilience by supporting vulnerable households and communities to generate sustainable income and withstand shocks. Programmes combine short-term recovery interventions—such as cash-for-work—with long-term solutions including savings groups, microenterprise development, and market systems strengthening.

SFS promotes climate-smart agriculture, livestock support, and food security to protect and diversify livelihoods, particularly in climate-affected and pastoral communities. Youth employability is enhanced through skills training, apprenticeships, and job placement, while financial literacy builds stronger economic decision-making.

Through integrated approaches to disaster risk reduction and nutrition-sensitive livelihoods, SFS enables communities to transition from vulnerability to self-reliance and long-term economic stability.

Priority Areas:

Cash-for-Work (CFW)

We implement cash-for-work programs that provide temporary income while rehabilitating community assets. Activities include infrastructure repair, environmental restoration, and basic public works. The approach strengthens household purchasing power during crises. CFW supports dignity, short-term recovery, and local economic circulation.

Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA)

We facilitate community-based savings groups that promote financial inclusion and self-reliance. Members save regularly and access small loans to support business and household needs. VSLA structures strengthen social solidarity and financial discipline. The model builds resilience against economic shocks.

Microenterprise Development & Start-up Grants

We support vulnerable households and youth to establish or expand small businesses. Assistance includes business skills training, mentorship, and start-up capital. We promote market-driven and sustainable enterprises. Income generation enhances long-term self-reliance.

Climate-Smart Agriculture

We promote agricultural practices that improve productivity while adapting to climate variability. Farmers are trained in water conservation, drought-resistant crops, and soil management. Our approach reduces vulnerability to climate shocks. Sustainable agriculture strengthens food security and income stability.

Livestock Health & Pastoral Support

We support pastoral communities through animal health services, vaccination campaigns, and improved husbandry practices. Livestock is a primary livelihood asset in Somalia. Strengthening animal health protects household income and food sources. Our interventions enhance resilience in drought-prone areas.

Financial Literacy & Business Skills Training

We equip individuals with practical skills in budgeting, savings, and enterprise management. Training strengthens decision-making and financial planning capacity. Participants are better prepared to manage income and expand businesses. Financial literacy supports sustainable livelihoods.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement

We facilitate structured apprenticeship opportunities that connect youth and vulnerable individuals with local businesses and skilled artisans. Participants gain hands-on experience, practical skills, and workplace exposure aligned with market demand. We work with private sector partners to support job placement and transition into decent employment. This approach strengthens income security while building sustainable pathways to self-reliance.

Market Systems Development

We analyze and strengthen local market systems to create sustainable economic opportunities. Interventions address supply chain gaps, access to finance, and market linkages. Our approach moves beyond short-term aid toward systemic change. Strong markets improve employment and household resilience.

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

We support communities to identify and mitigate disaster risks. Activities include early warning systems, preparedness planning, and climate adaptation measures. Reducing risk minimizes loss of assets and livelihoods. Prepared communities recover faster from shocks.

Food Security & Nutrition-Sensitive Livelihoods

We integrate food security interventions with livelihood support to improve household nutrition. Activities link agricultural production, income generation, and dietary diversity. Targeted support prioritizes vulnerable families. Strengthened livelihoods reduce dependence on emergency assistance.
