Training in human rights, leadership and teamwork
On 15 January 2012, SFS Board Member Michal Moskow traveled from Minnesota to SFS’s Operational Headquarters in Garowe, Puntland. Apart from meeting with community members, representatives of educational institutions, government officials and donors, Michal conducted a two-day training designed to help SFS’s field staff build their capacities and apply human rights concepts to all aspects of their programs.

SFS conducts outreach projects for youth at risk in Puntland
A project aimed at engaging youth at risk in productive activities, and at preventing them from joining violent groups, was launched in November 2012 in Bosaso and Galkayo. The project, funded by the Government of Japan, is being implemented by Somali Family Services in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNDP and UNICEF. The project’s aim is to engage 475 youth in activities that provide them with entrepreneurship and vocational skills, as well as experience in labor-intensive work.

SFS wraps up successful youth skills training in Garowe
In July 2011, 170 young Puntlanders completed a six-month youth skills training course with SFS. To prepare them to enter the workforce, SFS trained these 15- to 24-year-olds in a variety of practical skills, including communication, accounting and technology. SFS has already placed almost a quarter of the participants in paid jobs, another quarter as interns to continue developing their skills, and has commitments from local organizations to place another 30 percent of the young people in paid positions or internships shortly.

SFS raises its profile in Nairobi
One year after opening its liaison office in Kenya, Somali Family Services brought its partners and friends together for a reception at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi to raise awareness about its contributions to the political and social development of Puntland, Somalia. At the reception on 17 June 2011, those close to SFS’s work learned more about the variety of its programming, while newer friends who were less familiar with the organization’s work were introduced to SFS’s Puntland Library and Resource Center, human rights trainings, youth empowerment initiatives and much more.
